Tips for Choosing the Right Web-Based Course of Study

Online colleges and courses have made it easy for an adult to continue her education while still working full or part time. Which online course of study is right for you?

Adults that are in the workforce are commonly finding out that in order to move up the ladder at work, continuing education may be in order to obtain a higher degree or different degree than currently in one's possession. This puts most working adults in somewhat of a quandary: How to further education while still remaining employed and, in some cases, raising or maintaining a home/family life? One of the solutions is in adult online education courses, which are offered by a variety of recognized educational institutions such as the University of Phoenix and Walden University.

Before choosing a web-based course of study it is important to understand the goals for wanting to achieve a higher degree or change careers, as well as what is required in order to complete the course of study chosen. Here are five tips on navigating through the sometimes troubled waters of online adult education.

Flexible Schedule

The majority of web-based schools attempt to offer the most popular courses in a wide range of schedules, but make sure that the specialized courses that you need are offered when you can take advantage of them. Try to plan your course of study so that any specialized courses are taken first (if no prerequisite course is needed) so that they can be worked into your schedule.

Workload of the Courses

All courses offered online will have a course outline available to prospective students. Determine how much time a particular course will require so that you will be able to arrange your curriculum so as not to over burden yourself. One of the major reasons for students either taking an "incomplete" or dropping a class after signing up is the underestimation of the amount of work that is required by the classes. Make sure that you plan your curriculum not only around your daily schedule, but consider the total amount of time each course will require.

Class Instructor

Many online courses are specialized to specific needs and topics. If the course is highly technical in nature then the instructor should have experience in the workforce that can translate into how that particular class can relate to the real world. Several online schools will promote this aspect of the education offered. They will advertise the fact that their instructors are well qualified in specialized fields.

Courses that Require Prerequisites

While the availability of many courses found online is fluid, there are certain types of classes that require that you have taken a previous course to qualify for acceptance. It is important that you identify those classes in your curriculum so that you can plan your schedule accordingly. You do not want to find that a course, for which you registered for in the fall, required that you had taken a previous class earlier that spring.

Lab Work

Depending on the type of degree that you are seeking, some of the courses might require that you attend special labs or workshops. Make sure that you identify these classes early and plan for the extra travel time they will require.

Attending an adult online college or course of study can be both a satisfying and rewarding experience. To get the most out of any educational opportunity the student must be dedicated to her successful completion of the curriculum, but also to the idea that with a little forethought and preparation the transition can be a smooth one as well.
