If you have been considering going back to college as an adult, there are many choices now available. Here are some of the aspects to consider.
You’ve been thinking about it for a long time. You’ve put it off, for even longer. You have come up with all sorts of excuses. Going back to school after you have been out for quite some time, is a big step for many. Working around a busy schedule, which may include a family, children, taking care of ill parents, or full time or part time employment, can be difficult at best. If you have been considering returning to school as an adult, now is the time!!
With the advent of the Internet, continuing an education within the comfort and confines of ones own home is possible and for some, preferable to conventional learning. We can view and hear lectures, do homework, write papers, communicate with instructors and other classmates, while wearing pajamas and slippers if we choose! We no longer have to concern ourselves with driving to class, finding a parking spot, worrying about the weather or other issues that may hold true in conventional learning environments! We simply click a button and we are instantaneously transported to class!
When it comes to higher learning, we now have choices; going to school in the conventional sense, or taking courses on the Internet. Before making that final decision, consider the advantages and disadvantages of taking online classes and determine which method is right for you.
- Flexibility. You choose your own schedule, as long as you meet specific deadlines required by each course. You can work at 4:00 pm, or 2:00 AM. It is totally up to you.
- Availability. Many courses are now offered online.
- Location is no longer an obstacle or detriment. Not only can you choose a college or university many miles away from your location, you can also continuing taking your courses while you are on vacation or holiday (if you have the proper equipment)
- Convenience. As mentioned earlier, taking an online course is very convenient. You do not have to drive, do not have to leave your home or worry about a parking spot. As long as you have a computer and an Internet connection, the rest is up to you!
- No babysitters required. For those with younger children, babysitting issues can be a problem anytime you need to leave your home. With online courses, no babysitting services are required!
- Are you shy? If you are someone who has difficulty approaching others, don’t like crowds, or are just plain shy, communicating with others online may be easier than in person.
While there are many advantages to taking courses on the Internet, there are some disadvantages you need to be familiar with as well.
- No computer or lack of computer skills. If you are going to take a course online, you must have the tools to do so. You must have a computer and a fast Internet connection. Others may feel they are not computer savvy enough to try an online class.
- Social interaction. Although there is some interaction with the instructor as well as other students in an online class environment, if you need and prefer the socialization of a one-to-one contact with others, this type of course may not appeal to you.
- Discipline. In order to take an online course, you MUST be disciplined and stick to a regimented plan of study. If you have a tendency to procrastinate, have difficulty following directions without direct supervision, or are unable to meet deadlines, this type of schooling is perhaps not a good choice for you.
Continuing an education online is a wonderful alternative to traditional schooling, especially for those who lead hectic, stressful lives. As the saying goes, "a great mind is a terrible thing to waste"!!
